Our first adult field trip was a success! On Friday, April 10th, we visited the MSU Surplus Store & Recycling Center as part of a library program. Operations Coordinator Chris Hewitt gave us a behind-the-scenes tour of the Recycling Center, Vermicompost Facilities, and Surplus Store. We learned all about the incredible work they do and heard some pretty amazing (and often hilarious) stories along the way. Here are a few fun facts we learned during the trip:
- Caps can stay on plastic bottles.
- Don't worry about removing every last bit of paper from aluminum cans.
- Recycled milk jugs sell for a ton of money per unit because they don't contain the same dyes as other plastics.
- 95% of material recycled at MSU stays and is reused in Michigan. A large portion of the cardboard goes to Battle Creek to make cereal boxes!
